Wells marine insurance if you want to be treated right and well taken care of. They are on here and can be found in the boat insurace forum. You will be hard pressed to find anything bad about them

Yes, you definitely need liability. You may or may not want further coverage. As mentioned above, Adam Meyer at Wells is widely regarded as the best in Marine Insurance in the area.

If you have Homeowners insurance don't overlook your own carrier. Multi-policy discounts are available and if you've been happy with their service surely they'll provide the same service on their boat policies. Make sure you check any special limitations on add-on equipment or endorsements needed to increase coverages equipment you've attached to the boat as options.

I have progressive and I had a claim with them for a bent prop shaft. It was resolved extremely fast and the rep made two trips to the shop to make certain it was OK. I highly recommend them.

I don't know where you will have your boat, but check with your carrier. I HAD my boat with the same carrier as my house, all 3 trucks, and our life insurance policies. They no longer insure boats that are kept on islands. Fine in MHC, not in AB, Emerald Isle, etc. Not throwing rocks because they gave us plenty of notice. Went with Adam then and never looked back. wtg

The Huneycutt Group does a great job with all my Homeowners, Wind and Hail and Flood, but Adam at Wells handles all my boat insurance.
Progressive want write a policy once they find out you are on an Island.

NC Farm Bureau handles all mine...but They did ask question was I leaving on island or trailering back and forth? But rates and coverage were more then fair.

No matter the age of the boat, the insurance on it is not necessarily for you its for the liability side. Check progressive has some great policies, check with your agent you have your items with now, Wells will treat you like no one else in the industry will and knows marine better than anyone.

Guys just a word of advise...

Cheaper does NOT = Better.

Not even close.

When s*&t hits the fan you want someone in YOUR corner that will work FOR YOU.

Adam and Liz at Wells in the way to play IMHO!

Just a few notes to consider when purchasing boat insurance. Do not let an insurance carrier add this to your homeowner's policy as an endorsement. If you do and you have a claim, it could have a negative effect on your homeowner's policy. If you live in eastern NC most companies tend to think that at high tide the waves break in Wayne County anyway. Request that it be written on it's own individual policy or have the agent confirm that a boat claim will not go against your homeowner's. #2, make sure that if you are using the boat in tidal waters that it is rated as such. If you are rated for inland waters and your boat sinks in the inlet, you have a problem. I have written many boat policies that were mis-rated because the rate is cheaper if it is inland waters and many times the client has requested the cheapest thing possible. #3 Also be aware of wind deductibles if you keep your boat at the coast. Many have 1-5% named storm deductibles in the coastal areas, meaning that if the value on the boat is $100,000, the deductible for damage due to a named storm (tropical or hurricane) would be that % of the value, so $1,000 to $5,000. Dave is absolutely correct in saying that cheapest does not mean best. Make sure you have someone handling it that you feel comfortable with. #4 Also, if you are purchasing a new boat, some companies offer an endorsement that covers wear and tear and/or mechanical breakdown and will waive the depreciation for a certain period of time. Ask about it and understand how the endorsement works and what it will and will not do. That can be HUGE in the event of a claim. Ask questions and do not take the process lightly.

Aw, thanks, all of you, for the votes of confidence! We love what we do, and we love who we do it for - simple as that.

Paynefish makes some VERY excellent points in the post above - I second each and every one of them. Sage advice.

Look for a post soon with some more data that I think is relevant to everyone, including notes about "mechanical breakdown" - probably the least understood, but most valuable coverage, you could have. When you can get it, that is (more to come on this!).

Collector, your quote is on your email and ready for review!

Catch 'em up,

Adam

Second Rick Tudor. Switched from Wells with a tad better price and what I perceive to be better coverage.

Thanks Adam. I am waiting on a final sea trial for the new to me boat. One of the motors needed the injectors repaired found during the inspection. Should be done early this week then I can sea trial. If all goes well I have decided to go with Adam at Wells. His quote was fair, coverage outstanding and his knowledge and advice is great.
