I am new to this site, which is excellent by the way. I am coming down to Isle of Palms the week of August 9-16. Never fished SC before, so I need a lot of local knowledge and advice. Everything from gear, locations, coords, etc. would be most appreciated. I will have my wife and young son, sister, brother-in-law and their 3 kids. Looking for a good, fun time for the kids with some light tackle action possible. Looking for some good eats for everyone. Looking for some action onsails, etc for me and a couple of buddies coming in from Augusta mid-week. My wife tends to get seasick but she wants to go with me, so close to IOP and nearshore is her thing - quick run back to the marina. I also would love to cast net for shrimp and catch a few crab with the kids, would be great fun to watch them.
Nautic Star 2200 Offshore CC - less than 10 hours - never in salt.
I have fished the Gulf on much larger vessels for the past 12 years. Last trip to the Atlantic was 4 years ago out of Lauderdale. July-August, got a blue to 15' from the boat before line snap. Bad time of year, bad captain, left a bad taste in my mouth for the Atlantic. I hope SC can change my mind. |

there's plenty of spanish mack along the beach and a few kings. lots of flounder, trout and redfish in shore. I'm sure whatever rods you have for freshwater will work out for all those species (except for maybe a big king) but def light tackle. For spani's just put a number 1 planer on a couple of rods and drag a small silver clark spoon. for the inshore mud minnows, shrimp work best. don't know much about the shrimp or crab catching. nor do i know isle of palms very well, but fishing is pretty good this time of year so most anywhere should be ok. have fun and stay safe. _________________ 24' Mako -- Out of Bounds

I agree with the previous reply on the the inshore fishing and Spanish. The Spanish are pretty active. I also like the # 1 planer. I use about 15 to 20 foot of 30# mono attached to the planer with a snap swivel, and rigged with a Huntington Drone spoon. You can find them at Boaters World. I prefer the # 0 (about 2") in green with the yellow/green flash tape back. It is HOT. Pull it from 1/10th to 1/4 mile off the beach or around any nearshore structure. Check the local tackle shops and docks to find where to shrimp and crab. Have fun and be safe. One thing, as that you are from upstate. If you do not have an aluminum or Galvanized trailer... take it to the carwash immediately after dipping it. Flush the hollow areas good. _________________ Captain Tom Beckham
