60 nm due south out of Gtn. to 250' along with 3 charter boats, seas 2.5-3' headseas Great ride. Nothing like a Southport!!! Lines in immediate 25#+/- Dolphin. Followed by a some smaller gaffers & slingers and few sent back to grow up for next time. Interesting note, only the port side lines got hit all day, no matter the direction. Saw sails but they were not interested in us.
Crew consited of myself, and 2 business associates, they know jack about fishing, and as this was my 4th trip I only know Jill about it. Thank God for auto-pilot. First time all the bait rigging, gaffing, etc. was on me. Didn't gaff the boat once. "don't scratch the gelcoat!!!!" Only lost one rig/fish due to a possible quetionable knot. (see knots below)
HELP...Had a problem with lines crossing. 2 lines each outrigger, 2 flats, one center behind sink bulckhead. To the best of my ability...Outside riggers WWB, inside riggers WB, flats short. center WWWB. Thought I was making soft enough turns, but had to cut a bunch of mono. If memory serves, as I was skipper & crew and it's all a blur, kept having a cluster w/ all but the center wwwb. Maybe I need to bring in the inside rigger lines before turning? Maybe only run in a straight line
Some other interesting notes. Had some young fish hounds crewing a few weeks ago from Charleston SC. They rig all the Rods w/ Bimminis and Spiders with swivel snaps. The old timers in Georgetown tie "fisherman's knot" 8 twists then back thru the first twist? to the barrel swivel crimped at the end of leader. Hmmm different strokes
Still asking, still learning,

Thx for the report. Sounds like an awesome day out on the water.
i roll with the fisherman's knot. mainly out of laziness to learn others and that one seems to work.
the center console can definitely be a trolling cluster. For me anyways i have found it best to run the outside rigger back about 40 yards to start with inside half that distance. Then when i move one in our out i maintain that half distance. when i troll for kings i run 7 lines sometimes w/o the out riggers, but with the downriggers. i always keep that half ratio on the outside lines and it seems to work out pretty good. i definitely have my fair share of tangles, especially when i have to do all the work like you did! _________________ 24' Mako -- Out of Bounds

OOB,
thanks for that...it was indeed a chinese fire drill all day.
Got this from the same post at another site. Don't dare put it on Charleston fishing
"I fish mine kind of staggered. I fish my flat lines short and about a wave apart. Then, I fish my short riggers not too far back.. maybe four waves back from my flat lines and then the long riggers a few waves back from the shorts.
Keep in mind that they are a wave apart from each other so that I can turn real sharp and not tangle. The center pole is wwb. If it is windy 15+ knots, it is difficult to fish that center pole without fubars. If its rough I leave it in the boat.
I catch a lot up close on the flats in my boat."
Now all I need is younger eyes. I can barely make the waves much less the bait
Thanks again,
Jim |
