I have surf fished and pier fished all up and down NC and this year have just started fishing with my dad in his boats.. He has a carolina skiff 17ft w 70hp that we stay inside with sometimes we take the skiff out but not too far he also has an Angler 22ft Cuddy w a 225hp on it that we are looking to go to the Jungle with and I have been watching the weather and trying to figure out the best times to go but I was wondering what is the best wind for better seas...We took the skiff out july 3rd I think it was and we drifted from the Jim Caudle and drifted out that morning about 5 miles offshore and it was flat but later that evening it got rough coming back in... We use to charter boats years ago or go on a head boat and I have seen some rough weather and dont want to get caught like that with my son with us... My 7yr old son is going to be going with us and I dont want to get caught with my pants down if you know what I mean... Any help on figuring out the best weather conditions to go in would be appreciated... Thanks!

*Most* of the time if you go out in the morning and plan to start heading back toward shore in the afternoon you'll avoid the summer t-storms. Definitely not always the case, but better odds. I usually start at my farthest spot and then gradually work my way back towards the inlet so if the dark clouds come, i can get back to the hill quick. Don't forget to listen to your weather channel out there and if you are offshore and see conditions changing, don't be afraid to see if anyone's got a weather report on the VHF.

S & SW winds will almost always create worse sea conditions. In general I like to see winds 15knts or less. Preferably 10knts or less. Seas 3ft or less with 4-6 sec periods is nice. Or bigger seas if the periods are longer...10 sec. Reefcast here is pretty accurate for the most part. I'm not that good of a fisherman to where it pays to get my butt kicked Smile I fish out of little river so if you are ever out there or want a buddy boat let me know. I typically monitor 16, 68 and 69.

Thanks for the knowledge... We are looking to leave out sat morning about 6am and head toward the jungle and see whats happening.. Also sunday morning if weather permits... Hope it does cause I been getting rigs and stuff ready for a few weeks now and due to the boat being in the shop due to throwing a weight off the flywheel its now fixed and ready to go.. So hopefully all will turn out and the weather will cooperate... Thanks again...

I would all so look at the 65' hole and 70' hole too about the same distance out but back up east. Lost of kings and some Mahi Mahi there too. Use some ballyhoo and live cigar minnows you can jig up in those area too. Good Luck.

Sat is looking sporty. Sun looks better, but weather might be unstable this weekend with the tropical depression forming. I think I'm shooting for Sun at this point, but will keep checking the reefcast.

We decided to wait and try it sunday.. It seems reefcast is showing 2 to 3 footers for sunday. No point of beating ourselves to death when we can go another day and I dont want to take no risk especially with my son going with us.... Went today and seen Bob at South Chatham Tackle about some Pirate Plugs and picked up 12 of em so just sitting here rigging em up now and getting everything ready.. Seems the extra day is giving me time to make sure I got everything together.... But still Im watching the weather and making sure before we go out sunday...
